I.S.S.A. NOTES BY CABLEMAN

TOP AWARD GOES TO 44-YEAR-OLD

VETERAN

IN THE I.S.S.A. New Year's Honours List the premier award-the TV Trophyawarded to the Puller of the Year, was won by Harry Sawyer, of Ashford, Middx.

This 44-year-old veteran physical culturist staged a terrific come-back to regain the top award he won in 1962.

His outstanding feats in 1964 included 31 British records, the British middleweight championship and the Britain's best allrounder title.

Close behind Harry was last year's winner George Murray, of Barnehurst, Kent. George once more emerged as the country's number one heavyweight with a long list of British records.

The Webster Trophy, awarded annually for improvement, enthusiasm and activity, goes to Al Cameron, of Clydebank.

Al brings the trophy back to Scotland after a lapse of some six years.

A policeman, Al started the year as a raw novice and ended as a British champion and record-holder and also as an expert on the back press anyhow, one of the really tough pulls.

He also qualified as an area referee and works hard assisting Bill Montague, the organiser for Scotland.

In a most difficult contest to judge, Al was followed by Graham Durdey, of Horsham, Sussex, a former bodybuilder and lifter who did very well in his first year, breaking British records (23 in one session) and winning the British 10st. Championship.

The best junior trophy was won by 17-year-old Roger Cox, of Ashford, Middx.

One of our most active members, Roger broke 17 British junior records and 25 Area records, besides winning English and British junior titles.

Laurence Birch, of the Morecambe Barbell Club, came second, his first year ended as a British champion and record holder.

The best record of the year cup was won equally by last year's winner George Murray and Graham Durdey, of Horsham.

George did a press behind neck of 2581b. at heavyweight, and Graham did a back lateral raise of 1101b. at 9st.

Both pulls being 120% over the qualifying poundage.

Other outstanding pulls were George. Murray's right arm press of 4611b.-110%, and Terry Tree's press behind neck of 2321b.-110%.

The black spot of 1964 was the death of Gavin Pearson, founder of the International Steel Strandpulling Association. Gavin's contribution to strandpulling was a mighty one.

For years he drove himself on, travelling all over Scotland, England and Ireland to promote the sport.

In the past few years he had more than his share of misfortune, but it was a shock to us all to hear of his death.

A trophy is being presented by D. P. Webster, the I.S.S.A. hon. Technical Adviser, to perpetuate the memory of Gavin's efforts for his favourite sport.

Although always keen to compete, he was ever ready to act as an official and often such work is even more demanding. than competitions. Thus this trophy will be awarded each year to the most active official.

Few will dispute the fact that the first person to be honoured with this award should be the person who took over from Gavin our present Secretary-Bob Smith. The amount of work he does for strandpulling is known to us all.

The Britain's best all rounder scheme was again our most popular incentive See page 35
